The 2022 Chennai Open has got its two finalists, Magda Linette and Linda Fruhvirtova, who will face each other on Sunday.
The Polish veteran Magda Linette has been on a roll at the Chennai Open so far. She will be heading into the all-important final as the favorite.
The 30-year-old began her campaign with a convincing win against Moyuka Uchijima. In the second round, she made light work of Oksana Selekhmeteva. The quarterfinal match was a closer affair as Canadian tennis pro – Rebecca Marino almost managed to take a set off Linette. However, the match eventually ended 7-6 (12-10), 6-3 in favor of the Polish star. In the semifinal, Linette took on Katie Swan. After losing the first three games of the first set, the 23-year-old had to retire. The No. 174-ranked Swan suffered from sickness and injury in her quarter-final victory against Nao Hibino.
The 17-year-old has been quite impressive so far in the tournament. She recently won the Margaret Amritraj award for being the most promising young player of the tournament. She has certainly grown in stature as the tournament progressed and now finds herself on the cusp of winning her first WTA Tour title.
The youngster from the Czech Republic began her campaign with a loss in the first set. However, she pulled her socks up and produced a scintillating comeback to win the match 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. In the second round, Fruhvirtova outplayed Rebecca Peterson to win in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. The winning run continued in the quartefinals as she defeated Varvara Gracheva in straight sets. In the semifinals, Fruhvirtova had to dig deep to go past Argentine Nadia Podoroska, who came into the the clash high on confidence after ousting Eugenie Bouchard in the quarterfinals. The talented teenager won the match 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Magda Linette has a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head scoreline. She defeated Fruhvirtova in the round of 16 of the Tennis in the Land event in 2021.
Prediction: Magda Linette to win in three sets.
