Switzerland’s Joanne Zuger locks horns with Wimbledon 2014 runner-up Eugenie Bouchard in the round of 32 in the Chennai Open.
The 21-year-old has not had a great year thus far. She has not managed to win a title. At the German Open, she won her first-round match against Jule Niemeier 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 before losing in the second round to America’s Bernarda Pera 1-6, 1-6.
At the recently-concluded US Open, Zuger played the qualifiers. After winning the first qualifier against Katarina Zavatska, she lost to Viktoriya Tomova in the second one. Zuger participated in the TCCB Open where she defeated the likes of Jacqueline Cabaj Awad, and Matilde Paoletti, before losing to Dalila Spiteri in the quarterfinals.
Former World No. 5 has received a wildcard into the competition and she is one of the biggest names participating in the tournament. Bouchard was sidelined for the better part of 2021 after undergoing shoulder surgery.
The 28-year-old is looking to get back into some form after her comeback last month. She played in the WTA 125K tournament in Vancouver but lost in the round of 32 in straight sets against Arianne Hartono. In the US Open qualifiers, like Zuger, she won her first match against Yuki Naito before losing the second to Linda Noskova.
This will be the first meeting between Joanne Zuger and Eugenie Bouchard. Therefore, the head-to-head currently stands at 0-0.
Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard to win in three sets.
