The Polish veteran Magda Linette faces the talented youngster Katie Swan in what promises to be a riveting Chennai Open semifinal.
The 23-year-old won her 11th ITF title last month in the USA. She has now reached her first semifinal in a WTA event at the Chennai Open.
She began her campaign in India with a dominating win against Arianne Hartono in the first round. Swan followed it up with another good win against Anastasia Gasanova in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Swan lost her first set in the tournament against Nao Hibino but managed to hold her nerves to win the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
The experienced campaigner is the favorite to win her third WTA title and first since February 2020. Linette has dominated her opponents so far and is yet to drop a set. After a disappointing first-round exit at the recently-concluded US Open, Linette has made a strong comeback.
In the first match, the 30-year-old eased past Moyuka Uchijima 6-4, 6-0. In the round of 16, Linette outplayed Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-2, 6-0. Her toughest test came in the quarterfinals against the Canadian tennis pro – Rebecca Marino. Linette had to dig deep to win the first set but got things under control in the second to pick up a 7-6 (12-10), 6-3 win.
This will be the first meeting between Katie Swan and Magda Linette. Therefore, the head-to-head stands at 0-0 as of now.
Prediction: Magda Linette to win in three sets.
