The experienced Tatjana Maria and Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska lock horns in the round of 16 of the Chennai Open on Thursday.
The German veteran won an ITF title in the USA in February and the Copa Colsanitas in April. She also played some calculated tennis during her run to the semifinals at the Wimbledon Championships this year. Maria bowed out in the first round at Flushing Meadows after losing to Maria Sakkari. She took part in a WTA 125K event following the US Open setback and made it to the quarterfinals before being ousted by Nuria Brancaccio.
At the Chennai Open, Maria defeated the home favorite and India’s No. 1 Ankita Raina in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Maria is one of the contenders to win the competition in Chennai. However, she will have to deal with a lot of talented players as the tournament has just gotten underway.
The 25-year-old played the US Open but lost in the first round in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. She reached the semifinals in a couple of ITF tournaments in the Netherlands and Germany. In an ITF tournament in Spain, Podoroska made it to the final, before losing to Julia Grabher.
At the Chennai Open, Podoroska won her first match with relative ease against Kyoka Okamura with relative ease. The scoreline finished 6-4, 6-3 in favor of the Argentine.
Tatjana Maria has a healthy 3-1 lead over Nadia Podoroska. They faced each other for the last time in August in the round of 32 of the Granby National Bank Championships. The German star won the match 7-5, 6-1.
