Two unseeded players, Dusan Lajovic and Tomas Martin Etcheverry square off in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Chile Open on Friday.
The Serbian veteran has made it to his third consecutive quarterfinal. In the previous two quarterfinals in the Argentina Open and the Rio Open, he was ousted by Carlos Alcaraz. Lajovic began his campaign in Chile with a comprehensive win against Camilo Ugo Carabelli in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. The 32-year-old Lajovic had a win percentage of 83 on the first serve and converted 4 out of 5 break points.
In the round of 16, Lajovic got the better of Juan Manuel Cerundolo. The match went into the decisive third set where Lajovic managed to hold his nerves and win the match 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2).
The Argentine youngster has made it to the quarterfinals of a tournament for the second time this season. He opened his campaign with a fine win against Fabio Fognini. Martin Etcheverry blew away Fognini in the first set. The experienced Italian player fought back in the second set but went down in the tiebreak. The match ended 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) in favor of Martin Etcheverry.
The 23-year-old faced compatriot and 2nd seed, Francisco Cerundolo in the round of 16. The riveting clash ended with the score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in favor of Martin Etcheverry.
This will be the first encounter between Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Dusan Lajovic. Therefore, the head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0.
