Algieri’s journey in martial arts began when he was 10 years old and started training in Chinese Kenpo under the guidance of Robert Mauro. By the age of 15, he had attained a black sash. At 16 years old, he began competing in amateur kickboxing, ultimately achieving two Catholic League titles and one Catholic State Championship. After finishing high school, Algieri spent three seasons as an assistant coach to the St. Anthony’s Friar Wrestling team before turning professional at the age of 19, following an undefeated amateur career that culminated with him winning the USKBA Northeast Championship.
Algieri went pro in 2008 and had an 18-0 record with 8 knockouts. He fought in the light welterweight and welterweight divisions and won a unanimous decision against Emmanuel Taylor in 2014, which led to his inclusion in the world rankings. Promoter Eddie Hearn had better opponents lined up for WBO light welterweight champion Maurice Hooker, including Chris Algieri, in December 2018. At the Hulu Theater in New York City, Algieri defeated Danny Gonzalez, a longtime sparring partner, in a 10-round fight by unanimous decision.
