She was world No. 1 for 260 weeks and was the year-end world No. 1 singles player seven times (1974–78, 1980, 1981). She dominated women’s tennis in the 1970s and 1980s.
Her tennis playing started at just five years old when she started taking lessons from her father who was a professional coach. Evert became the No. 1 ranked under-14 girl in the country. She defeated the world’s no.1 player Margaret at that age which resulted in her selection to the US Wightman Cup team as the youngest player in competition history.
At just the age of 16, Evert made her Grand Slam tournament debut at the 1971 US Open. Reaching the semifinals, she ultimately fell to Billie Jean King in straight sets. This was just the start as she went on a record 55-consecutive-match winning streak.
Among her greatest accomplishments in the 80s, Evert beat Martina Navratilova at the 1986 French Open, giving her final Grand Slam title. Evert reached 34 major singles finals, the most in history. She holds the record for most consecutive years (13) of winning at least one major title.
Evert’s career winning percentage in singles matches of 89.97% (1309–146) is the second highest in the Open Era, for men or women.
