Christopher Keith Irvine was in Manhasset, New York, United States of America to a Canadian couple. He shares a Scottish descent, and his father, Ted Irvine, was an ice hockey player for the New York Rangers.
Jericho graduated in 1990 from Red River College in Winnipeg, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in creative communications.
Jericho had an interest in wrestling since he was a kid. He used to watch the local American Wrestling Association and cites Owen Hart, Brett Hart, Ricky Steamboat, and Shawn Michaels as his inspirations.
Chris Jericho Professional Wrestling Career
Jericho wrestled in the independent wrestling circuits from 1990 to 1991. He wanted his wrestling name to be ‘Jack Action’, but went with ‘Chris Jericho’, picking ‘Jericho’ from the name of a heavy metal album Walls of Jericho by German band Helloween.
Thanks in part to a recommendation made by Chris Benoit to Paul Heyman, Jericho signed with Extreme Wrestling Championship (ECW) in 1995. He fought there until he drew the attention of Extreme Championship Wrestling in later in 1996.
Alongside ECW, Jericho also appeared on NPJW in Japan, before a move to WWF finally arrived. He signed in 1999 and made his debut in August in resonating fashion. He interrupted The Rock to announce that “Y2J” had come to “save WWF”.
He won his first singles titles after beating Chyna for the WWF Intercontinental Championship in 1999. After winning the Tag Team title with Chris Benoit in 2001, he went on to become the 4th Grand Slam Champion in 2001.
At Vengeance in 2001, he beat The Rock for the World Championship and ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin for his first WWF Championship to become the first undisputed WWF champion. After an iconic storyline with Christian, more titles followed.
In total, he has won the World Heavyweight Championship (3x), Intercontinental title (9x), Tag Team Championship (5x), European Championship, amongst a multitude of titles. He left WWE in 2018 and now fights in AEW, where he signed in January 2019.
