Caroline Garcia and Aryna Sabalenka will lock horns in the semifinals of the ongoing Cincinnati Open. Expect a lot of fireworks when these two fine players collide with a spot in the final up for grabs.
The former World No. 2 will be eyeing her first title in 2022. She came close twice but failed to overcome the final hurdle. At the Stuttgart Open, she looked impressive but a rampaging Iga Swiatek outplayed her in the final. Swiatek once again got the better of her at the Italian Open semifinal. Aryna Sabalenka had a solid campaign at the Libema Open but she lost in the final against Ekaterina Alexandrova.
At the Canadian Open, she won her first match with relative ease against Sara Sorribes Tormo but lost in the next round against Coco Gauff in three sets. She started her campaign at Cincinnati against Anna Kalinskaya who had to retire midway through the match. Sabalenka had won the first set and was leading the second set 4-1 when Kalinskaya had to pull out. In the round of 16, Sabalenka defeated Shelby Rogers 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4. The quarterfinal clash between Sabalenka and Zhang Shuai ended in two sets as the 24-year-old won 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).
The 28-year-old has had an impressive season thus far. She has already tasted success in 2022 at the Bad Homburg Open and the Poland Open. She is eyeing her third title this year.
At the Canadian Open, she was ousted in the first round by Alize Cornet 6-3, 3-6, 3-6. Caroline Garcia began her run at the Cincinnati Masters with a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 win against Petra Martic. She followed it up with a sensational win against World No. 3 Maria Sakkari 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (6-8), 6-1. In the round of 16, she defeated Elise Mertens in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. The Frenchwoman registered another victory in straight sets when she faced Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinal.
Aryna Sabalenka leads the head-to-head 2-1. With the kind of form Garcia is in, we are expecting her to tie the score.
Prediction: Caroline Garcia to win in three sets.
