We are in for an epic showdown between two sensational tennis players – Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters.
The Russian tennis pro began the year on a solid note and almost won the Australian Open. He reached the final and won the first two sets against Rafael Nadal, but the veteran came back strongly to take the next three sets to win his 21st Grand Slam title.
The World No. 1 Medvedev reached the Libema Open final but suffered a shocking defeat in straight sets against Tim van Rijthoven. Medvedev took part in the Halle Open and reached the final without dropping a set. However, he lost his third final of the year and this time it was against Hubert Hurkacz. The final jinx was finally broken at the Los Cabos Open as Medvedev won the title by defeating Cameron Norrie in the final.
At the Canadian Open, Medvedev bowed out in the first round itself following a loss to Nick Kyrgios. He entered the Cincinnati Open and has played some good tennis to get the better of Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 7-5, and Denis Shapovalov 7-5, 7-5.
Taylor Fritz has been in great form this season. The 24-year-old has won 34 out of the 47 matches he has played thus far. He has already bagged two titles in 2022. The first one came at the Indian Wells Masters where he defeated Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the final. The second title came at Eastbourne International where he defeated compatriot Maxime Cressy in a three-set thriller.
At the Canadian Open, Fritz defeated Andy Murray and Frances Tiafoe to reach the round of 16 before being ousted by Dan Evans. So far in Cincinnati, Fritz has won against two solid opponents in Nick Kyrgios and Andrey Rublev.
Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz have not met each other before on the ATP tour. So the head-to-head currently sits at 0-0.
This will undoubtedly be a closely-fought encounter. Both men are in good form and it is a clash that fans will not want to miss. Medvedev might get the win against Fritz in three sets.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev.
