A mouth-watering encounter awaits us as Marin Cilic and Carlos Alcaraz face each other in the round of 16 of the ongoing Cincinnati Masters.
The Croatian has had his share of struggles with form this season. He has just won 25 out of the 39 matches he has played in 2022 thus far. The bright spots came at the French Open and Queens Club Championships where he reached the semifinals.
At the Canadian Open that preceded the Cincinnati Masters, Cilic defeated Borna Coric and Karen Khachanov in straight sets before losing to Tommy Paul in the round of 16. The 2014 US Open champion began his campaign in Ohio with a comprehensive win against Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-3. Cilic followed it up with a dogged performance against Emil Ruusuvuori which allowed the 33-year-old to win the match 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5.
The third seed has been exemplary in 2022 winning 43 out of 51 matches thus far. He has also won two Masters 1000 titles in Miami and Madrid. The Spaniard also emerged victorious at the Rio Open and Barcelona Open.
Alcaraz entered the Canadian Open on the back of two final appearances at the German Open and Croatia Open. He was expected to have a deep run in Montreal but he was ousted by Tommy Paul in the first round. At the Cincinnati Masters, Alcaraz picked up an easy win against Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 6-2 in the first round.
The head-to-head scoreline is evenly poised at 1-1.
Alcaraz is the favorite going into the match. He has been playing some excellent tennis and if he continues the same against Cilic, then we might see him finish the match in straight sets.
Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz.
