Why Manchester City should sign star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
According to Sporting Life (h/t Daily Express), Charlie Nicholas has urged Manchester City to launch a bid for Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
A former Gunners striker, Nicholas believes that Aubameyang could be an excellent replacement for City’s veteran finisher Sergio Aguero if he opts to depart.
With 20 goals from 32 appearances this season, Aubameyang has been in sensational form for the Gunners. Out of his 20, 17 of them have been scored in the Premier League, making him an integral part of Mikel Arteta’s side.
The Arsenal skipper is currently his side’s top goalscorer in the league and is only second to top scorer Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy, who has 19 to his name.
The Gabon international’s mere numbers suggest that he has arguably been Arsenal’s best signing in recent times. Aubameyang, who arrived at the Emirates back in 2018, has featured 97 times for the Gunners across all competitions and has a whopping 61 goals under his belt.
He was also the joint top-scorer in the league last season after netting 22 goals from 36 matches. However, despite Aubameyang’s fine form, Arsenal have struggled in the league this season, with the club lying a lowly ninth in the league standings. If not for the Gabon international’s goal-scoring exploits, the club would have suffered even more.
Meanwhile, Nicholas feels that defending champions City should make a move for the £50million-rated star striker. The Pep Guardiola-led side are currently second in the league, behind leaders Liverpool.
How would the dynamics work?
Though City’s attack consisting of finishers Aguero and Gabriel Jesus has been good enough, the arrival of a consistent star striker like Aubameyang could help them climb to the top once again.
If Aguero ends up leaving the Etihad, Nicholas’ words make perfect sense as Aubameyang is a lethal goal machine.
Veteran finisher Aguero, who arrived at the Etihad back in 2011, has been one of their best players, helping them dominate English football in the last decade. A winner of four league titles and one FA Cup, there is no denying the striker’s talent. He is still the side’s top-scorer with 16 league goals to his credit.
However, he is 31 already and City just have a backup option in Jesus, who, however, has not risen up to the standards of his Argentine teammate. Hence, City signing the talismanic Aubameyang would only do a world of good.

Verdict
Manchester City currently lack enough forwards in their squad and signing the talented Aubameyang will be a blessing if they still wish to stay on top. In case Aguero ends up leaving the club, Aubameyang would be the best option for Man City to approach.
