McCollum started playing basketball in his high school days at GlenOak High School. He was training all day to improve his skills and to achieve his goal of entering the NBA League. On seeing his performance McCollum received various scholarships from colleges. At the end of his career, McCollum’s total score count was 1,405 points and was awarded the Gatorade Ohio Player of the year award.
He decided to join Lehigh University by rejecting the offers from other colleges. McCollum made a huge impact on the Lehigh team, as he averaged 19.1 points with 5 rebounds per game in the freshman season. Out of the 33 games he played, he started in 31 games for Lehigh. At the end of his senior year, McCollum decided to enter the 2013 NBA draft.
