Clarence Avant Early Life

Clarence Alexander Avant, a visionary figure in the music industry, was born on February 25, 1931, in Climax, North Carolina. Raised in a bustling household with seven siblings, he attended a small school in Greensboro until eighth grade. In pursuit of greater opportunities, Avant’s family relocated to New Jersey in 1947, when he was still a teenager.

Arriving in New Jersey, Avant took his first steps into the music world as a stock clerk at Macy’s and also worked with a law directory. However, it was his association with Teddy Powell’s music venue, Teddy P’s Lounge in Newark, that sparked his entry into the music business during the 1950s. This marked the beginning of a remarkable journey that would see him become a prominent figure in the industry.

Avant’s rise was facilitated by his mentorship under Joe Glaser, a music manager who had guided Louis Armstrong’s career. Avant’s keen interest in managing and promoting artists led him to handle the careers of several influential musicians. Notably, he managed R&B singer Little Willie John and worked closely with jazz icons like Sarah Vaughan, Kim Weston and more.

In 1962, Avant incorporated Avant Garde Enterprises, Inc., which marked a significant step in his career. Collaborating with talented artists like Lalo Schifrin and Jimmy Smith, he produced notable works like “The Cat,” which showcased his prowess as a music producer.

Avant’s influence extended beyond music management. He served as an adviser and board member of industry associations like the National Association of Radio Announcers (NARA) and the National Association of Television and Radio Announcers (NATRA). He also lent his expertise as a consultant to innovative projects like PlayTape, a tape cartridge system developed by MGM Records.

In 1966, Avant established Sussex Productions, Inc., an independent record production company that worked with artists such as Johnny Nash, Terry Bryant, and Billy Woods.

The company’s success continued with the creation of Venture Records Inc. in 1967, a pioneering endeavour that achieved the first joint venture between an African American artist and a major record company. Avant’s acumen for business and partnerships led to the label’s collaboration with William “Mickey” Stevenson, a former Motown songwriter and producer.

Clarence Avant Career

As Avant’s career progressed, he played a pivotal role in selling Stax Records to Gulf + Western in 1968. His skills as a negotiator and strategist contributed to the successful acquisition of the renowned record label.

With a focus on advancing African American representation, Avant founded Sussex Records in 1969. Although the label encountered financial challenges and ultimately closed in 1975 due to tax issues, it left an indelible mark on the music industry. Notably, Sussex Records signed artists like Bill Withers and Dennis Coffey.

Avant made contributions to broadcasting, in addition to the music industry. He founded Avant Garde Broadcasting, Inc. in 1971 and purchased the first FM radio station in metropolitan Los Angeles owned by an African American. Avant’s efforts demonstrated his commitment to enhancing possibilities for minority voices despite obstacles and bankruptcy in 1975.

Avant’s dedication to the arts was evident in his role as executive producer for the 1973 film “Save the Children.” This production, which combined performances by black entertainers with poignant depictions of marginalized communities, premiered at the iconic Apollo Theater in Harlem.

Clarence Avant’s early life and career illuminate a trailblazing journey through the music and entertainment industries.
