American teenage tennis sensation Coco Gauff makes an entry into the United States of America team for the first time for their upcoming Federation Cup (Fed Cup) qualifier against Latvia on Wednesday.
The 15-year old is considered a potential future star after her heroics at the Grand Slam tournaments where she knocked out higher-ranked opponents such as Naomi Osaka and Venus Williams.
She will now join tennis legend Serena Williams, Sofia Kenin, Alison Riske and Bethanie Mattek-Sands for their upcoming clash against Latvia which will be held on February 7th and 8th respectively.
The two sides will meet each other at the Angel of the Winds Arena, in Everett, Washington and the matches will be held in a hard-court surface.
A visibly excited Gauff was quick to share her happiness on being selected into the national side by posting a tweet of her inclusion. She is currently the youngest member of the side at 15 years of age and Serena being the oldest at 38.
Both sides have never tied off against each other ever before and it sure looks like an interesting contest on the cards. The American side will be captained by former tennis player Kathy Rinaldi.
Meanwhile, the Latvian side will feature former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, Anastasija Sevastova, Diana Marcinkevica, and Daniela Vismane, with Adrians Zguns being handed over the captain’s duties.
Despite being a star-studded squad, all eyes will be on young Gauff as she gears up for her Federation Cup debut.
Gauff had recently exited the ongoing Australian Open after suffering a fourth-round loss to her Federation Cup teammate Kenin, who surprisingly has reached the semi-finals of the Slam event.
Kenin will next face World No.1 women’s singles player and local girl Ashleigh Barty for a place in the final.
Tennis fans and sporting enthusiasts from around the world were quick to react to Gauff’s selection as they took to Twitter to congratulate the teenager on her selection. Here are a few of them:
