This year’s US Open has seen a lot of surprises. The early predictions have gone out of the window quite quickly. We are guaranteed to have a first-time Grand Slam champion in the men’s event.

The 18-year-old Coco Gauff made it to the quarterfinals this year and the likes of Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams couldn’t. The young American wasn’t born the last time the US Open quarterfinal did not feature Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Serena Williams.

The last time the US Open quarterfinals took place without legends like Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, and Williams was way back in 2003. Gauff was born a few months later on 13 March 2004.

The 8 players who reached the men’s quarterfinals were Andre Agassi, Federico Coria, Andy Roddick, David Nalbandian, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Younes El Aynaoui, and Sjeng Schalken, and Lleyton Hewitt. Roddic won the final.

The 8 players who reached the women’s quarterfinals were Anastasia Myskina, Amelie Mauresmo, Paola Suarez, Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport, Francesca Schiavone, and Justine Henin-Hardenne, and Jennifer Capriati. Henin-Hardenne won the final.

Rafael Nadal lost in the second round, in what was his first appearance at Flushing Meadows. The Spaniard was ousted in straight sets by El Aynaoui.

16-year-old Novak Djokovic wasn’t a part of the tournament. This was also the only major event between the 1997 Australian Open and the 2011 French Open where neither of the Williams sisters took part.
