Artis Leon Ivey Jr. aka Coolio was an American rapper. He is a Grammy Award-winning rapper. But before becoming a rapper he worked in several jobs such as volunteer firefighting and security as well.
Coolio recorded his first single in 1987, titled “Whatcha Gonna Do?” He also recorded “What Makes You Dance (Force Groove)” with Nu-Skool in 1988. Coolio made connections in the L.A. rap scene, and in 1991, ended up joining the group WC and the Maad Circle, led by rapper WC.
Tommy Boy Records signed him in 1994, and his first solo album, “It Takes a Thief,” was released in July of that year. The album went Platinum in the U.S. and Gold in Canada.
Coolio’s single “Fantastic Voyage” was certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA and reached #3 on the “Billboard” Hot 100 chart.

Coolio was born on August 1, 1963, in Compton, California, to parents Jackie Slater and Leon Ivey Sr., who were carpenters. They got divorced when Coolio was just 11 years old.
He had a hard time coping with his parent’s divorce, and he joined a gang called the Baby Crips and began bringing weapons to school as a teenager. At age 17, he spent a few months in prison after being charged with larceny.
Artis Jr. was married to Josefa Salinas in 1996, but they got divorced in 2000. He had six children with four different women.
On September 28, 2022, a tragic incident happen at a friend’s Los Angeles house. Coolio was discovered unresponsive on a bathroom floor. He was pronounced dead by first responders. He was 59 years old at the time of his death. Coolio’s manager stated he appeared to have suffered a cardiac arrest.
