Why Crystal Palace should make a move for Hull’s Jarrod Bowen

According to Sky Sports, Crystal Palace are in talks to sign forward Jarrod Bowen from Hull City in a deal worth £16m plus add-ons.

Jarrod Bowen, 23, is third on the top goalscorers list in the Championship this season with 16 goals, two behind Brentford forward Ollie Watkins and Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. He has also supplied five assists in his 29 league matches this season and has registered 54 goals and 13 assists in 131 matches for the Championship club.

Hull City are vulnerable to losing the 23-year-old left-footed forward as he will be out of contract this summer. The Tigers have the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months but that has not yet been activated, the report adds.

Crystal Palace have brought in Cenk Tosun on loan from Everton until the end of the season, while they are also on the verge of signing West Brom right-back Nathan Ferguson.

The Eagles have managed only 22 goals in 24 games so far. Jordan Ayew has surprised with his performances this season but his consistency is questionable. Palace have been over-reliant on Wilfried Zaha and Luka Milivojevic for goals over the last two seasons — with the duo contributing 41 goals across all competitions — but they have struggled this season.

Despite signing Tosun on loan, Roy Hodgson’s side still lacks a potent goalscorer and Bowen could be that player for the Eagles.

Signed from Hereford in 2014, Bowen has made over 100 appearances for Hull. He has been magnificent at the KCOM Stadium over the last three seasons. The 23-year-old netted 22 goals in 46 appearances across all formats last season, bettering his 2017/18 campaign’s tally of 15 goals in 44 appearances. He has also supplied seven assists over the last two Championship seasons.

The Englishman can play across the frontline and wouldn’t be limited to one position in Hodgson’s system – unlike Zaha. Palace need a versatile goalscorer and Bowen would be a perfect fit, given how well he has been performing.

Verdict

A quality player, Bowen would be a great addition for the Eagles. Hence, Palace must quickly secure the 23-year-old’s signature.
