Crystal Palace Opinion: Why Palace should go all out for Ademola Lookman
According to a report from the Daily Mail, Crystal Palace are keen on prising Everton winger Ademola Lookman away from Goodison Park this summer.
Ademola Lookman, 21, joined Everton from Charlton Athletic in January 2017, but has made just 45 Toffees appearances for the Merseysiders. He was loaned out to RB Leipzig for the second half of the 2017/18 campaign after lacking regular game time under former Toffees boss Sam Allardyce.
The 21-year-old impressed during his short stint in the Bundesliga with five goals in 11 appearances, but he has regularly been used as a substitute in Marco Silva’s debut season as Everton manager, making just three league starts this campaign.
Certainly, Lookman’s development at Everton has stalled, with Silva preferring the likes of Bernard, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Theo Walcott and Richarlison in the attack ahead of him. That said, the upcoming summer transfer window would be the right time for the young winger to exit Everton and move to a club where he’ll get regular opportunities to excel.
Crystal Palace would be an ideal destination for the 21-year-old, who could potentially replace the in-demand star Wilfried Zaha.
Zaha has spoken about his desire to play in the Champions League and challenging for trophies next season. Perhaps, that is the case why Palace are willing to let the Ivorian leave this summer and value him at a staggering £80m, adds the report.
If Zaha leaves Selhurst Park in the summer, Roy Hodgson should not hesitate to splash the cash on Lookman. Lookman has shown glimpses of his quality at Goodison Park and he proved out on loan with RB Leipzig that he can make a huge difference at senior level.
He is an exciting winger with tremendous pace and trickery, capable of bamboozling his opponents with tricks and flicks. His sheer quality, composure on the ball and spatial awareness at 21 is quite unreal. The former Charlton prospect excels with his ability to change directions quickly and dribble at pace, whilst possessing the shooting ability to test the goalkeeper from range.
All in all, Lookman would add a different dimension and the youthful exuberance to an already exciting Palace attack.
Verdict
Palace have relied heavily on Zaha for assists and goals for the last few years, but if he leaves in the summer, Hodgson will need to fill his void. A promising young talent, Lookman has the ingredients to light up Selhurst Park, whilst being a potential long-term replacement for Zaha.
