He was selected in the first round as the 18th overall pick. He was a member of the Arizona Wildcats in college. He was named to the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team as a sophomore in 2022.

Terry played in all 26 games for the Wildcats as a freshman, starting 14 of them and averaging 4.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game.
He quickly established himself as one of the conference’s top defensive players, earning All-Defensive First Team honours. Terry led Arizona to a 33-4 record, winning the 2021 Roman Main Event, the Pac-12 Conference regular season, and the Pac-12 tournament in 2022. Arizona qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2018.
In his final game as a Wildcat, he set a career high with 17 points against Houston. Terry declared for the 2022 NBA draft while still retaining his college eligibility on April 22, 2022. He later decided to stay in the draft.
