The experienced campaigner John Isner takes on compatriot and 6th seed J.J. Wolf in the semifinals of the 2023 Dallas Open.
The 5th seed has made it to the semifinals of the Dallas Open for the fourth time. He has not lost a set thus far in the competition but has had to win four sets out of six in tie-breaks.
In the first match, Isner defeated Tseng Chun-Hsin in two competitive sets 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-1). Isner showed a masterclass in serving in the round of 16 as he defeated Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) with a win percentage of 91 on the first serve and smashing 18 aces in the process. Isner continued with his serving supremacy in the quarterfinals as he defeated Emilio Gomez 7-6 (10-8), 7-5. The 37-year-old hit 23 aces and had a win percentage of 90 on the first serve. In this encounter, Isner notched up his 500th tie-break win.
The 24-year-old has played some fine tennis this season. He has lost only one set in the three matches he has played so far.
In the round of 32, Wolf registered an easy win against Brandon Holt in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. The former had a win percentage of 93 on the first serve. Wolf followed it up with another solid performance against Radu Albot in the round of 16 where he defeated the Moldovan player in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Wolf went on to defeat 2022 US Open semifinalist and 2nd seed Frances Tiafoe after dropping the first set. The match ended 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in favor of Wolf who had a win percentage of 82 on the first serve.
J.J. Wolf and John Isner have faced each other on only one previous occasion. The latter defeated Wolf in three sets in the round of 32 of the 2021 Atlanta Open.
