Top seed Taylor Fritz squares off against an upbeat Wu Yibing in the semifinals of the 2023 Dallas Open on Saturday.
After a disappointing campaign in the Australian Open, Taylor Fritz has come back strongly in the Dallas Open. The home favorite has defeated two other compatriots in the tournament thus far.
Fritz received a bye into the second round where he faced Jack Sock. The world No. 8 was made to work hard by Sock. However, Fritz came out victorious in two sets 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. In the quarterfinals, Fritz took on 7th seed Marcos Giron. Fritz won a closely-contested first set before losing the second set. The decisive third set went Fritz’s way as he made it to the semifinals. He had a win percentage of 81 on the first serve and that held him in good stead in the encounter.
It has been a memorable campaign thus far for Wu Yibing. He became the first Chinese man to reach an ATP semifinal since 1995.
Yibing defeated Michael Mmoh in the round of 32 in three sets. The 23-year-old followed it up with a huge upset win against 3rd seed Denis Shapovalov. The match ended with Yibing winning two tight sets 7-6 (7-1), 6-4. In the quarterfinals, Yibing got the better of French veteran and 8th seed Adrian Mannarino in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. Yibing managed to convert three out of three break points in the encounter.
This will be the first encounter between Taylor Fritz and Wu Yibing. Therefore, the head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0.
Prediction: Taylor Fritz to win in straight sets.
