DeAndre Hopkins started out as a brilliant multi-sport athlete in D. W. Daniel High School in Central, South Carolina. He had had 57 receptions for 1,266 yards and 18 touchdowns on offense and 28 interceptions and five touchdowns on defense in his high school career while also playing basketball and running track and field.

He committed to Clemson University to ply for the Tigers, under head coach Dabo Swinney. Hopkins had 206 career receptions in college, which was the most by a Clemson receiver since Aaron Kelly had 232 from 2005–2008.

Hopkins was ranked third in the wide receiver list of the 2013 draft with Houston picking him in the first round.
