DeAndre Hopkins is on one of the best contracts in the National Football League. The Arizona Cardinals handed him an extension worth $54.5 million across two seasons. That comes down to $27.25 million per season at the very height of his playing career. Hopkins earned this contract along with receiving a $27.5 million signing bonus plus the salaries of 2020, 2021 and the 2021 option bonus.
Hopkins quite frankly could retire by 2024 but it is likely that he will continue to play football. The wide receiver is among the very best in the NFL and deserves this sort of money. DeAndre Hopkins started out as a brilliant multi-sport athlete in D. W. Daniel High School in Central, South Carolina. He had had 57 receptions for 1,266 yards and 18 touchdowns on offense and 28 interceptions and five touchdowns on defense in his high school career while also playing basketball and running track and field.
He committed to Clemson University to ply for the Tigers, under head coach Dabo Swinney. Hopkins had 206 career receptions in college, which was the most by a Clemson receiver since Aaron Kelly had 232 from 2005–2008.
Hopkins was ranked third in the wide receiver list of the 2013 draft with Houston picking him in the first round. He signed a four-year $7.62 million contract, becoming the highest wide receiver to come out in Clemson’s history. He went on to make his debut against the San Diego Chargers, recording five receptions for 55 yards in the 31–28 victory.
In the 2014 season, Hopkins began as a starting receiver alongside Andre Johnson under new head coach Bill O’Brien. Eventually, he was traded to the Arizona Cardinals in 2020 for running back David Johnson, a 2020 second-round pick, and a 2021 fourth-round pick.
