8th seed Ben Shelton takes on compatriot Marcos Giron in the round of 32 of the 2023 Delray Beach Open on Tuesday.
The talented youngster has enthralled the tennis world with some fine performances. He began with an upset win against Sebastian Baez in the round of 32 of the ASB Classic. Shelton couldn’t build on the win though as he lost to Quentin Halys in the following round.
The 20-year-old impressed everyone with his scintillating run to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. Shelton defeated the likes of Zhang Zhizhen, Nicolas Jarry, Alexei Popyrin, and J.J. Wolf, before losing to Tommy Paul in four sets. Shelton was ranked 569th last year but has improved his ranking substantially and is currently placed at No. 42.
The 29-year-old had a decent start to the season as he made it to the quarterfinals of the ASB Classic with wins against Federico Coria and J.J. Wolf. Giron eventually lost to Cameron Norrie. In the Australian Open, he faced 7th seed Daniil Medvedev in the first round and couldn’t offer much resistance against the former world No. 1.
In the Dallas Open, Giron reached the quarterfinals with wins against Alex Rybakov and Oscar Otte. Top seed Taylor Fritz ended his run in the quarterfinals.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0 as the two players have never faced each other as yet.
Prediction: Ben Shelton to win in three sets.
