3rd seed Denis Shapovalov begins his Delray Beach Open campaign when he takes on Michael Mmoh in the round of 16.
The Canadian sensation directly played in the Australian Open after ending last season with a second-round exit in the Paris Masters. Shapovalov defeated Dusan Lajovic in the first round and Taro Daniel in the second round before going down to 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz in five sets.
In the Dallas Open, Shapovalov received a bye into the second round. He lost to eventual champion Wu Yibing in two competitive sets. The 23-year-old has once again received a first-round bye in the Delray Beach Open and will hope that her campaign doesn’t end as early as it did in Dallas.
The 25-year-old began the season by playing in the Maharashtra Open. Mmoh lost to 6th seed Filip Krajinovic in the round of 16. In the Australian Open, he made it to the third round of a major for the first time. This was after he made it to the main draw by winning three rounds of qualifying. In the second round, Mmoh registered a huge win against Alexander Zverev. Mmoh played in the Dallas Open where he lost to Wu Yibing in the first round.
In the round of 32 of the Delray Beach Open, Mmoh defeated compatriot Aleksandar Kovacevic in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Michael Mmoh leads the head-to-head scoreline 1-0. He defeated Shapovalov in the qualifiers of a Challenger event in Tiburon in 2016.
