Top seed Taylor Fritz locks horns with Ecuadorian No. 1 Emilio Gomez in the round of 16 of the 2023 Delray Beach Open.
The American tennis star was one of the star performers on the USA side that won the inaugural United Cup. He went on to play in the Australian Open. Fritz was seeded 8th in the tournament and was expected to have a deep run. However, his campaign ended in the second round as he lost a thrilling tie against Alexei Popyrin.
Fritz entered the Dallas Open as the top seed. He registered a couple of wins against compatriots Jack Sock and Marcos Giron in the first two rounds before going down to eventual champion Wu Yibing in the semifinals. Fritz received a bye into the second round at the Delray Beach Open and will start his campaign against Gomez.
The 31-year-old did not have a great start to the year as he lost in the first round in a Challenger event in Canberra. In the Australian Open, Gomez lost in the second round of qualifying.
In the Challenger event in Cleveland, Gomez managed to reach the semis where he lost to Aleksandar Kovacevic. The Ecuadorian veteran produced his best result at the Dallas Open as he reached the quarterfinals of an ATP event for the first time. He defeated the likes of Gabriel Diallo and Miomir Kecmanovic before losing to eventual runner-up John Isner. Gomez’s win against Kecmanovic was also the first top-50 win of his career.
This will be the first meeting between the two players and therefore, the head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0.
