After working as a janitor for a few months, Rodman started playing basketball for North Central Texas College. After playing for one semester, he transferred to Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
In 1986, he was drafted by the Detroit Pistons where he joined the squad known as the ‘Bad Boys.’ The ‘Bad Boys’ were famous for their physical plays and were a menace to their opponents.
In 1989, Rodman along with Isiah Thomas won his first NBA title. Pistons swept the Los Angeles Lakers 4-0 in the 1989 NBA Finals.
In 1990, Rodman won his second NBA title by defeating the Portland Trail Blazers in five games. By then, he had won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award.
Rodman played for the San Antonio Spurs for two seasons but was traded to the Chicago Bulls in 1995. His legendary rebounding skills were an asset for the Chicago Bulls. In Bulls, he joined the deadly duo of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.
With the Bulls, Rodman won three back-to-back NBA championships in the year 1996, 1997, and 1998.
After that, he joined the Los Angeles Lakers for the 1998-1999 season. With the Lakers, he played only 23 games, which he started in 11 of them and averaged 2 points and 11 rebounds per game.
In the 1999-2000 season, he joined the Dallas Mavericks. Despite averaging 14.3 rebounds per game, he was highly unmotivated to play on the team. As a result, he retired from the NBA after the season ended.
