Why Derby County should make a move for Fraser Forster in the summer
Derby County shot-stopper Kelle Roos started the season as number two to Scott Carson, however, he has been given an extended run in the side recently with the latter injured.
Roos has grabbed the opportunity with both the hands in that time, repaying Frank Lampard’s faith with a number of impressive performances between the sticks. In fact, he actually kept Carson out for the game against Preston at the start of February when the ex-England international had to settle for a place on the bench.
However, the 26-year-old Roos is out of contract at Pride Park at the end of the season. Lampard, meanwhile, has praised the Dutchman and confirmed talks are ongoing with the player and his agent over a new deal.
So with Roos likely to extend his stay at Parkhead and Carson set to turn 34 in September, Lampard should make a move for another goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. That said, the Derby manager would be wise to sign Fraser Forster from Southampton.
Fraser Forster, 30, is a forgotten man having not played a single game for Southampton this campaign. He lost his place in the Saints’ starting XI midway through last season after a horrid run of form, concluding in a five-goal thrashing at Tottenham Hotspur on Boxing Day.
And the 30-year-old is now the third choice at St Mary’s behind Alex McCarthy and summer signing Angus Gunn. There is clearly no room for Fraser Forster at Southampton and he should leave the club as soon as the summer transfer window opens.
Having another goalkeeper to compete for the first-team starting spot would surely help Derby County next season. Forster would undoubtedly be a top addition to the Rams’ goalkeeping ranks, although he has not played since December 2017. He has made over 100 Premier League appearances in his career, as well as starring for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
Standing at 6ft 7in tall, Forster is a physically commanding goalkeeper and possesses fantastic organisational skills. He would offer some real experience to a relatively young Derby side, whilst bringing competition for Roos and Carson.

As for Forster, he will be hoping to secure a new club at the end of the season and earn some much-needed game time and revive his career. And if the Rams manage to bring him to Pride Park, he will certainly take Lampard’s men to another level altogether.
