Why Derby County must sign Tottenham’s Cameron Carter-Vickers on loan

According to TEAMtalk (h/t The Derby Telegraph), Derby County are among the host of Championship clubs looking to sign Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers on loan.

Cameron Carter-Vickers, 22, spent the first half of the season on loan at Stoke City. He made 15 appearances for the Championship club but was recalled by Tottenham at the start of the month after falling out of favour under new Stoke City boss Michael O’Neill.

The report (h/t The Derby Telegraph) adds that Fulham, Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough have enquired about the 22-year-old’s availability on loan for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile, Derby County are currently 16th in the Championship with 28 games played and remain nine points behind the final playoff spot. They are unbeaten in their last five league games, winning three in the process.

The Rams need a boost at the moment with some ageing and inexperienced players not hitting the heights. Wayne Rooney has bolstered Derby’s attacking options and Phillip Cocu would be wise to shift his focus towards addressing the defence, which has leaked 36 goals in 28 games.

Derby are short in that department following Richard Keogh’s sacking back in September. Curtis Davies has been sloppy at the back and is slowly heading towards the twilight of his career. Matthew Clarke arrived on loan from Brighton before the start of the season but has struggled with injury problems. A lack of stability at the back has haunted the Rams and Cocu should attempt to solve his defensive problems before the transfer window closes.

Having said that, the Championship club must go for Cameron Carter-Vickers. The 22-year-old spent last season with Swansea City, making 33 appearances. Before that, he spent time with Sheffield United and Ipswich Town. The USA international made only 15 appearances for Stoke in the first half of this season but another loan spell would help him gain additional experience.

Verdict

Carter-Vickers would be a good signing for Derby since his presence would boost a position that needs depth. Hence, Cocu’s Derby should complete a deal for Carter-Vickers as quickly as possible.
