In order to begin, you need to determine which planet you are going to. Excavation Site XII is located on Earth, specifically in the European Dead Zone. A Lost Sector from the EDZ rarely appears or is relevant to Destiny 2. Excavation Site XII can be reached easily by either of the two drop zones. 

In either case, you should drop by Winding Cove, or beside The Gulch. If you choose either option, then you must proceed west toward Firebase Hades. On the map, you will see two Lost Sectors located opposite the firebase. The Lost Sector to the north of Firebase Hades is the one you want. The one that is much higher up should be your goal when you notice the two Lost Sector symbols in these hills.

It is just beside that symbol that you will find the entrance to Excavation Site XII; just go in and enter the cave to access the Lost Sector. Once inside, simply search the cave to find the enemies and complete the Lost Sector.

Keep in mind

First, head off to The Gulch’s landing zone to find Excavation Site XII. Once you land, turn around and cross the road. The road will take you to the Red Legion’s Firebase Hades. Keep following the road and don’t stop once you’ve reached the top. There will be several Psions waiting at the top of the distinctive rubble path.
