However, Red Bull ended its relationship with Sauber at the end of 2001 and in 2004, Mateschitz bought Jaguar Racing and renamed it to Red Bull Racing. In football, Mateschitz owned German club Red Bull Leipzig, Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg and American club New York Red Bulls. He also owned a German ice hockey club EHC Munchen, which changed its name to Red Bull München.

Mateschitz never married, but has a son named Mark Gerhardter. He lived in Fuschl am See, Austria and owned Laucala Island near Fiji, which he bought from the Forbes family for £7 million. Mateschitz passed away aged 78 on October 22, 2022.
