Dillian Whyte Early career
Before switching to MMA, Whyte was a professional kickboxer. He won the BIKMA super-heavyweight British title, which allowed him to become a two-time British heavyweight kickboxing champion. He also won the European K1 championship and held the UK #1 ranking for five years in his weight category of 95 kg.
Whyte defeated Anthony Joshua in three rounds of his maiden amateur fight against Joshua in 2009 at the age of 20 by unanimous decision. Due to a disagreement with the ABA over his history in kickboxing, Whyte had a mediocre amateur record (6-0-0, 5 KOs), which prompted him to turn professional in 2011 against the wishes of his trainer Okoh.

On May 13, 2011, Whyte made his professional debut. He competed against Tayar Mehmed and won. On December 3, 2011, Toni Visic of Croatia was defeated by American Dillian Whyte via technical knockout (TKO) in the third round after referee Jeff Hinds stopped the contest after 1 minute and 46 seconds. The seasoned journeyman Hastings Rasani was Whyte’s opponent in his subsequent match, which took place on January 21, 2012, at the Liverpool Olympia in Liverpool. Rasani was defeated by Whyte in a PTS match for his third straight victory based on points.
After being examined, a sample Whyte had provided for an in-competition drugs test after defeating Hungary’s Sandor Balogh on October 13 tested positively for the illicit stimulant methylhexaneamine. The news broke as Whyte was making his way to a press conference to announce a title fight in England. According to the UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) organization, Whyte was temporarily barred from any competition as of November 5, 2012. Whyte returned to boxing on November 21, 2014, at the Camden Centre in London to fight Ante Verunica.
The fight lasted two rounds, and Whyte delivered a hard shot that forced a stoppage from referee Jeff Hinds for a TKO victory. Whyte was given the go-ahead to compete on October 12, 2014, following his two-year suspension by UKAD.
At the City Hall in Hull on December 20, 2014, Whyte defeated heavyweight contender Kamil Sokolowski via TKO in three rounds. A deal was ultimately reached for Whyte and his arch-rival and fellow Londoner Derek Chisora (26-6, 18 KOs) to square off in a WBC championship eliminator. Two judges gave Whyte victories in the fight, 115-113 and 115-114, while one judge gave Chisora the victory, 115-114.
A fight between Whyte and Lucas Browne (25-0, 22 KOs) was eventually scheduled for the 24 March at London’s O2 Arena on January 11, 2018. The WBC Silver championship of Whyte would be on the line. In the sixth round, Whyte caught Browne with a powerful left hook to the head, rendering him unconscious and winning the fight.
The rematch between Chisora and Whyte was declared to take place on December 22 at The O2 Arena on Sky Sports Box Office on November 1. At heavyweight, Chisora was ranked no. 5 by the WBA and IBF, no. 7 by the WBC, and no. 11 by the WBO. Whyte prevailed via KO after receiving a strong left hook in the eleventh round.
On the undercard of Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Anthony Joshua II, Whyte took on Mariusz Wach on December 7, 2019. Whyte won the fight by unanimous decision, with two judges scoring it 97-93 and the third 98-93. In 2022, Whyte received $7.5 million in a clash against Tyson Fury which he lost.
Whyte was supposed to face Alexander Povetkin on May 2, 2020, to defend his WBC interim title, but owing to the COVID-19 outbreak, the fight was moved to August 22 at the Matchroom Sports headquarters in Brentwood, Essex. Whyte was knocked out in the fifth round of the bout, forfeiting the WBC interim championship and his right to compete for Tyson Fury’s WBC title.
Alexander Povetkin was due for an instant rematch on November 21, 2020, but that fight was postponed to March 27, 2021, when Povetkin tested positive for COVID-19. The fight took held in Gibraltar in front of spectators, and Whyte prevailed in the fourth round through technical knockout. With the victory, Whyte was able to reclaim the WBC interim heavyweight title.
