The Telegraph reports that Harvey Barnes is expected to be rewarded with a new contract by Leicester City after a good start to the season. Barnes has been a lifelong Leicester player and it shows the club’s faith in him.
The 22-year-old English midfielder is a product of Leicester’s youth academy that he joined aged 9. Barnes was still in the U-23s when he was loaned out to Milton Keynes Dons in 2017.
Upon his return, he was promoted to the first-team but was immediately sent on loan to Barnsley. He was recalled midway through the season but didn’t feature much for Leicester in the remainder of the season.
A similar loan deal followed in 2018 to West Brom. Again, he was recalled midway through the season. He was made a part of the first-team and safe to say he did not fail to impress. Barnes has played a total of 67 games for the Foxes, scoring 9 and assisting 12 (source – Transfermarkt).
He has featured a couple of times for the England youth sides and was recently called up to the senior team for the upcoming friendlies and UEFA Nations League fixtures.
For 13 years, Harvey Barnes has been a part of Leicester City. Yes, there were a couple of loan spells but that’s normal. Barnes has never complained about anything in the past regarding game time or his loan spell and sudden recalls.
He has taken it all in his stride and kept going until he got his opportunities. Slowly over time, he has been eased into the first-team and he is now one of the first names on the team sheet.
Barnes is a versatile player who has played in multitudes of positions for Leicester. Left-midfield, right-midfield, attacking-midfield or left-wing, you name it. He has been used by Brendan Rodgers to fit the team’s needs.
His recent call-up to the national team proves how far the 22-year-old has come since his youth days. While competition for places are high in the Three Lions squad, it just shows that you can do anything through hard work.
He will no doubt be a fantastic option for the national team and with time, he should only get better. A new contract from Leicester is a sensible move to secure his long-term future and it’s surely something that Barnes deserves for all the good work he has done so far.
