UFC stars aren’t offered a lot of protection when they go into the Octagon, but there is a question if they do need to wear cups.
The UFC is possibly one of the most brutal sports out there and there really is no protection for the male or female participants.
The only bit of protection they use is a mouthguard, but more often than not, both fighters end up getting busted during a clash.
However, there is some debate from fans of MMA regarding the usage of protection cups in matches.
These cups are used to keep the private regions of stars safe, and such gear is used in other sports.
Cricket is one that uses the cup a lot while batting, especially with deliveries coming up at over 100km/h regularly.
Mistakes can happen in any sport and getting hurt in that particular region can be very painful.
The world of MMA isn’t any simpler, and there have been instances of a mistimed or misplaced kick or punch ending in the wrong region.
Most of the MMA stars throw a mean punch, and the last thing anyone would want is getting hurt downstairs.
All male athletes have to wear a cup when inside the Octagon. Apart from their mouthguard, this is the only other protection they get.
The surprising bit is that female athletes do not have to wear one. They can take a decision on wearing the protective cup, but it is up to them completely.
MMA referee John McCarthy also shared his views on this topic and claimed that protective cups for female athletes wasn’t a requirement.
There have been incidents in the past during female MMA fights where low blows have taken place, however, even cups don’t provide a lot of protection.
There are several designs and materials of cups made which help in movement in the Octagon, and the UFC has rules on what can be used and cannot.
The UFC rules highlight that fighters have to follow certain regulations and protective cups cannot include additional padding or materials that are not allowed by the promotion.
The right cup can also provide better movement within the Octagon and during training. Cups ensure that the groin isn’t overworked and avoids chances of a serious injury when in action.
