Doc Rivers Career
Glenn Anton “Doc” Rivers was the 1983, Round 2, 31st overall draft pick by the Atlanta Hawks. Rivers played in the position of Point guard and he is also the 2008 NBA champion (as a coach).
After playing college basketball for Marquette University from 1980 to 1983, Rivers was drafted in the second round (31st overall) of the 1983 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks.
Rivers played for the Atlanta Hawks from 1983 to 1991. Notably, while playing for the Hawks, Rivers became an NBA All-Star in 1988. Rivers then went on to play for the LA Clippers (1991–1992), New York Knicks (1992–1994), and San Antonio Spurs (1994–1996). Finally, Rivers retired after the 1996 season.
In 1999, Rivers began his coaching career with the Orlando Magic. He coached the Orlando Magic from 1999 to 2003. Notably, Rivers won the Coach of the Year award in 2000.
In 2004, Rivers became the head coach of the Boston Celtics. He coached the Celtics from 2004 to 2013. On June 17, 2008, with the Celtics, Rivers won his first NBA Championship as a head coach.
In 2013, Rivers became the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers. Simultaneously, he also became the senior vice president of basketball operations on the team. Subsequently, on June 16, 2014, the Clippers promoted Rivers to the President of basketball operations, along with his coaching duties.
However, in 2017, Rivers gave up his post as president of basketball operations. Finally, on September 28, 2020, Rivers stepped down as the head coach of the LA Clippers.
Currently, from 2020 onwards, Rivers is the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers.
