Dominic Thiem’s hopes of a maiden Australian Open title suffered a major blow when he lost to defending champion Novak Djokovic

Australian Open runner-up Dominic Thiem claims that he wants to win a Grand Slam when the top guys are round referring to the big-three of tennis – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.

The 26-year old Thiem was talking to the media after his maiden Australian Open final loss to Serbian Djokovic when one of the reporters asked if he really felt that it was a pleasure to play in the current era.

Thiem, who had earlier voiced his admiration for the big-three, stood by his words and underlined that had it been a different era it would have been much easier to win a Slam but said that it mattered more when they were around.

“Yeah, that’s what I said. I think the same what I said that these guys brought tennis to a complete new level, and really they also brought me probably to a much better level and I think it was amazing how the matches went this week,” Thiem explained.

“It’s great tennis, it’s a great show for everybody and of course it would be or it was easier for sure if it was in a different era to win big titles.”

“That’s hundred percent but I am happy that I can compete with these guys on the best level and I really hope that I also win my main Slam when they are still around because it just counts more,” the Austrian concluded.

Small details matter

Thiem was of the opinion that with a little luck and understanding the smallest of details were enough for somebody to end this Grand Slam streak by the big-three.

He also added that the other future players need to put in hard work and determination if they wish to have better chances in future.

“I think it’s only small details but in the last 2 finals of US Open and here it was really close. It could have gone either way for Daniil (Daniil Medvedev) in US Open and for me here,” he said.

“So, there is nothing special to say about it. It takes nothing more than a little bit luck, little bit details there maybe if I convert to break the point in the fourth set, maybe.”

“I am sitting here as a winner, so, it just takes hard work and that me and the other young players, who definitely have the potential to win a Slam to play every single of this four with determination and give myself a new chance, hopefully,” the future star opined.

Thiem could have won this clash as he was leading two sets to one. However, Djokovic turned things around in the fourth set to win the title.
