Donald King is an American boxing promoter known for his involvement in several historic boxing matchups. He has been a controversial figure partly because of a manslaughter conviction and civil cases against him.
After graduating he initially ran an illegal bookmaking operation out of the basement of a record store, but this operation came to a halt when King was jailed for murder. Upon being released, Don King immediately pursued a career as a boxing promoter.
One of the first steps in his career path was for Mohammed Ali to fight in a charity event that would help raise money for a hospital. His breakthrough came when he negotiated a record-breaking $10 million purse for the much-anticipated showdown between George Foreman and Mohammed Ali in 1974 which is popularly known as “The Rumble in the Jungle” which took place in Zaire, Africa.
King’s next major accomplishment came with the promotion of Ali’s fight against Joe Frazier. Don King dubbed this meeting the “Thrilla in Manilla” because of its location in the capital of the Phillippines.
Don King has represented some of the biggest names in boxing including Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes, Julio César Chávez, Andrew Golota, Félix Trinidad, Roy Jones Jr., and Marco Antonio Barrera. Don King was born on August 20 1931 in Cleveland Ohio, USA. He was born to his father Hattie King and Clearance King. There is not much information about his siblings.
He attended Kent State University, although he soon dropped out. King has been charged with killing two people in incidents 13 years apart. In 1954, King shot a man in the back after spotting him trying to rob one of his gambling houses. King was convicted of voluntary manslaughter for stomping one of his employees to death. He even served three years and eleven months in prison.
Don King was married to Henrietta King until 2010. Since Henrietta died on December 2 2010 at the age of 87. He has one biological daughter, Debbie, a son, Eric an adopted son Carl, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
