Doug Christie Net Worth And Salary
Doug Christie is said to have an estimated net worth of $20 million. He was one of the best defenders during his time in the NBA and he made a decent chunk of money from it. Of course, Christie did not stop working after hanging up his boots like most professional athletes. He was in need to earn for his family and got into coaching, currently with the Sacramento Kings as an assistant.
Christie was mostly a fringe player early on in his career making the league minimum of under $2 million with the New York Knicks and the Toronto Raptors. His most lucrative deal was towards the latter part of his career where he made above $8 million with the Orlando Magic.
Doug Christie Basketball Career
Doug Christie started playing streetball in Seattle. He led his high school team. Rainier Beach High School to the state championship in 1988 and then went to Pepperdine University to get national recognition. He was named WCC Player of the Year twice and led the team to two NCAA tournaments while averaging 19 points. He was declared for the NBA draft in 1992, getting picked 17th overall by the Seattle Sonics.
Unfortunately, due to contract issues, he could never play for his hometown team and was moved to the Lakers. He mostly featured on the bench before getting traded to New York a year later. Then, the Toronto Raptors came calling in 1996 and his luck began to change. Christie earned a starting spot, and became a scorer which earned him a move to Sacramento and a higher salary in 2000.
Christie became one of the fan favourites in Sacramento, emerging as one of the best defensive forces in the league. He was named in the NBA Defensive 2nd Team thrice and to the NBA Defensive First Team once in 2003. The Kings lineup then had Christie, Jason Williams, Peja Stojaković, Chris Webber, and Vlade Divac. They came to be known as “The Greatest Show on Court”. With Christie on the court, the Kings turned into a playoff side and then a championship-contending team.
He was traded to Orlando next, leaving Sacramento as their second all-time player in terms of steals collected. Christie’s career faced a downslide after that. His left ankle surgery did not heal properly during his time with the Mavericks because of which he got waived. After a long period off the court, Christie tried to mount a comeback with the Clippers signing a 10-day contract. But he decided to officially retire right after.
