World No. 1 Iga Swiatek will take on 5th seed Coco Gauff in the semifinals of the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships on Friday.
The 21-year-old has played some scintillating tennis this season. She missed out on the Australian Open but came back strongly to successfully defend the Qatar Open title.
Swiatek began her campaign in Dubai with a thumping win against Leylah Fernandez. The Polish star won the match 6-1, 6-1. She went on to ease past 14th seed Liudmila Samsonova in yet another lopsided encounter. Swiatek was set to face former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinals but that didn’t happen as the Czech veteran pulled out prior to the match owing to a viral illness.
The American teenager is eyeing her second title of the season. She came into the tournament following a loss in the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open.
After receiving a first-round bye, Gauff made light work of Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second round. Gauff won the match 6-0, 6-4. The 18-year-old was about to face Elena Rybakina in the third round but the Kazakhstani No. 1 pulled out owing to lower back pain. In the quarterfinals, Gauff defeated compatriot Madison Keys in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. Gauff converted 4 out of 5 break points in the match.
Iga Swiatek has an incredible 5-0 lead against Coco Gauff in the head-to-head scoreline. The Polish sensation defeated Gauff in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 in the group stage of the 2022 WTA Finals.
Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in straight sets.
