Elise Mertens hails from Leuven and is the second child of Liliane Barbe, a teacher, and Guido Mertens, a furniture craftsman specializing in church furnishings. Her education was through homeschooling, during which she developed a passion for languages, becoming proficient in French, English, and Flemish Dutch.
Her introduction to tennis came early, at the age of four, thanks to her older sister Lauren, who is now an airline pilot. When it comes to her love life, Elise is currently in a relationship with former tennis player Robbe Ceyssens.
