Jari Laakkonen and Eva Ruusuvuori were blessed with a baby on 2 April 1999. They named him Emil, and the youngster began playing tennis at the age of just five. He has a brother named Elias and a sister named Aino. Mika Muilu was the tennis coach that saw potential in Emil for the first time. They spent a lot of time together so that Emil could pick his coach’s brains.

Emil Ruusuvuori: Junior Career
Emil Ruusuvuori entered his first ITF Juniors tournament in 2013, and it was at the Nokia Junior Cup. The Finnish youngster was ranked world No. 4 in the ITF combined junior rankings at one point. He made it to the singles quarter-finals of the Australian Open boys’ singles event. He also reached the semi-finals of the US Open boys’ singles event and won the ITF Junior Masters.

Emil Ruusuvuori made his debut in the main draw of a Challenger event at the Bangkok Challenger in 2018. He came through the qualifiers and made it to the second round at the event.
2019 was a fine year for Ruusuvuori as he made impressive progress in the ATP rankings. He started 2019 ranked No. 385, but by the time the year ended, he found himself up by more than 250 places to No. 123.
Ruusuvuori’s first Challenger title triumph came in April 2019 and he added 3 more titles to his name by the end of the year. In September 2019, he produced a sensational upset win against then-world No. 5 and two-time French Open finalist Dominic Thiem in a Davis Cup match, where Finland was pitted against Austria.
Ruusuvuori was ranked No. 100 when he made his Masters debut and reached the second round at the 2020 Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. He also made it to the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career at the 2020 US Open. His first tour-level semifinal appearance also came in 2020 in Nur-Sultan. He crashed out of the tournament after losing to French veteran Adrian Mannarino.
For the first time in his career, Ruusuvuori made it to the fourth round at a Masters 1000 event. It was at the 2021 Miami Open. During his run in the tournament, he stunned then-world No. 7 Alexander Zverev to record his second win against a top-10 player. Till now, this is his best result at a Masters 1000 event.
Another impressive result for Ruusuvuori in the year 2021 was his run to the semi-finals at the Atlanta Open. He defeated the skilful Cameron Norrie, en route to the semi-finals.

In 2022, Ruusuvuori reached his first ATP tour final at the Maharashtra Open. He was ousted by Portuguese veteran, Joao Sousa, in the final. The 23-year-old made his Wimbledon debut in 2022 as well. After defeating Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round, he lost to Botic van de Zandschulp in the second.
Coming to Grand Slam singles results, Ruusuvuori’s best result in all four Grand Slam events is reaching the second round. He made it to the second round of the 2021 Australian Open. In 2022 he progressed to the second round at the French Open and Wimbledon. In the US Open, he made it to the second rounds in 2020 and 2021.
He is currently playing in the Stockholm Open where he has made it to the quarter-finals with wins against Joao Sousa and Jiri Lehecka, in the first couple of rounds.
