Emilia Romagna GP 2022: Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez grabbed a 1-2 finish for Red Bull on Sunday as Ferrari endured a rather difficult day.
Max Verstappen had a great weekend in Imola as he grabbed maximum points to close the gap on Championship leader Charles Leclerc. The Dutchman won the Sprint race on Saturday and followed that up with victory in the main race as well.
Verstappen cruised to victory at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, closing the championship lead on Charles Leclerc to 27 points after four races. Sunday’s race was a rather eventful one with the change in weather after the track dried up following a few showers. Nevertheless, Max Verstappen’s margin of victory showed that the reigning world champion wasn’t ready to loosen the grip on his title just yet.
Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez finished the race in P2 while Lando Norris took the final step on the podium. For a long period in the race, it seemed as if Ferrari driver Leclerc would take a podium place at least but the Monegasque crashed while attempting to put the pressure on the Perez. Leclerc was lucky to get moving again and he eventually finished in P6.
However, Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz wasn’t so lucky as the Spaniard suffered a second DNF in a row. Sainz tangled with Daniel Ricciardo on the opening lap and beached his Ferrari on the gravel, unable to get out of the trap.
George Russell managed an impressive P4 finish with Valtteri Bottas in P5. AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda crossed the line in 7th while Sebastian Vettel, Kevin Magnussen and Lance Stroll also finished in the points.
Here’s what the Drivers’ Standings look like after four races:
