There was much hype around the announcement of the 26-man England squad that would be travelling to the UEFA Euros. Gareth Southgate announced a 33-man provisional squad last month which itself raised a few eyebrows. The final England squad for Euros looks like this:
As you can notice, there are some names missing from the provisional squad. In total, seven players were culled, a list which included: Aaron Ramsdale, Ben Godfrey, Ben White, Jesse Lingard, James Ward-Prowse, and Ollie Watkins.
Here, we will list out the starting XI made up for players who will not be going to the Euros, majorly consisting of players who missed out on the provisional squad as well. These include some big names from Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham, while also looking at some of the underrated performers in the Premier League.
Ramsdale did not let Sheffield United feel the absence of Dean Henderson to a great extent and was impressive this season despite the Blades’ relegation.
One of the most surprising names left out of Gareth Southgate’s side. Yes, the manager had a lot of players available in that position but it’s very rare to see an English first-team Manchester United player miss out on the England squad.
Could he have been included over Conor Coady or Tyrone Mings? Maybe. But that’s not for us to say. For now, he’ll have to be content with his name on our list.
Dier has been a regular for Tottenham Hotspur alongside Toby Alderweireld this season. He started out as a defensive midfielder but has found his place in defence, a versatility Southgate could have benefited from.
The West Ham United left-back has a wonderful left foot that could have spurred England on. He managed to miss out on the squad despite his 8 Premier League assists this season.
The set-piece specialist was one of the names who did not make the cut off for the final 26-man squad. It’s a real shame because he was impressive this season for Southampton.
The Leicester City playmaker was left out of the team, which was a shock to many. He has 11 goals and 10 assists for the Foxes this season as he almost took his team all the way to a top-4 finish.
The Chelsea youngster still has a few years to go until he hits his prime, but he has shown enough to be in contention for the Euros squad. Who knows, he could have been like Theo Walcott of 2006 in this current England squad.
The exclusion of this in-form Man United loanee was perhaps hard for even Southgate to make. It was evident from the fact that Lingard played in the friendly against Austria despite not making the cut.
It’s baffling that a striker can get 17 league goals and 8 assists in a season but still not go to the Euros. That’s what has happened with Leeds United’s Bamford.
Another name that could have potentially been included over Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin is Southampton’s Danny Ings. The 28-year-old is in very good form and managed 12 league goals despite injuries this season.
This list doesn’t even include names like Max Aarons or Dele Alli, which just goes to show the scary depth that England possess within their ranks. Did you think we missed out on any name? Let us know below.
