Everton Opinion: Why Everton should cash in on Idrissa Gueye this summer

According to a report from Liverpool Echo, Everton have been warned to expect more Idrissa Gueye interest in the summer from his advisor,
Thierno Seydi.

The Senegal international, 29, was subject of strong interest from Paris Saint-Germain in the January transfer window, with Everton having rejected two offers from the Ligue 1 champions. Now the midfielder’s advisor, Thierno Seydi, has claimed that a lot of big clubs will be interested in Idrissa Gueye this summer.

Despite a move to Parc des Princes didn’t materialise, Gueye’s attitude has been exemplary and in recent weeks he has been influential in the Toffees’ upturn in form. But come summer, Marco Silva should sell the Senegalese star and make a solid profit over the £7.1 million they paid Aston Villa to acquire his services back in 2016.

Gueye will turn 30 in September, the start of a period where players generally start declining. The midfielder might not have shown any signs of slowing down as such but the truth is he hasn’t been at his sublime best this season. The Senegalese has done well in patches—especially of late—but overall he has struggled to assert himself in games.

The 29-year-old is one of the best tacklers in the Premier League and is a player known for his defensive diligence, energy and work-rate. He is neither a goalscoring midfielder nor someone who can carve open opposition with defence-splitting passes.

In fact, Gueye is a defensive-minded player who with his energy, tackling and work-rate helps the Toffees ticking all over the pitch. But the reality is Gueye hasn’t been close to his best which in turn has left Everton’s defence exposed a lot of times this campaign.

The job of a defensive midfielder is to protect the backline, breaking opposition’s play and recycle possession. The Senegal international, however, has been poor on the ball and ineffective off it.

Verdict

And as Gueye will turn 30 later this year, the summer transfer window will be the right time for the Merseysiders to cash in on the midfielder. With the money Everton get from his sale they must use it to reinforce other areas of their squad.

After a disappointing debut season at Goodison Park, Marco Silva must rectify his mistakes and bring in the players that fit his system in the summer. By selling Gueye, who himself is keen on a move to a European club, the Portuguese tactician should reinvest that money especially on signing a central defender and a centre-forward.
