Newcastle United Opinion: Magpies should offload Joselu this summer

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle United could get underwhelming forward Joselu off their books in the summer.

The same report claims that the 29-year-old Spaniard has attracted interest from China and the Magpies could offload him to raise some valuable funds.

Joselu, who made his move to Tyneside from Stoke City in the summer of 2017 for a fee of £5million, has struggled to make an impact in the Premier League.

The Spaniard has only managed 6 goals from 46 appearances in the Premier League and it is very clear from those figures that he has failed to deliver the goods for Rafael Benitez and Newcastle.

With West Brom loanee Salomon Rondon establishing himself as the first-choice striker, the 29-year-old has struggled for regular minutes and he hasn’t done an awful lot even when he has been on the pitch. Joselu has started only 5 games in the Premier League this season, scoring twice, but he has barely played 10 minutes in the league since the turn of the year.

It is quite clear that Joselu is not considered as an important first-team player any by Benitez any longer and it makes little sense for the player to stick around at Tyneside for another season.

Given that he would have only 12 months left on his current deal at the end of the season, it would be ideal for Newcastle to offload him in the summer. While offering him a new contract would be next to a blunder, the Magpies should look to sell him for a profit, with some Chinese club reportedly interested in securing the Spaniard’s services.

Joselu hasn’t shown anything to convince the club that he is capable of delivering the goods in the Premier League and cutting ties with him should be the way forward for Newcastle.

In fact, they need to focus more on signing Rondon permanently at the end of the season. The Venezuelan has been at the centre of everything that the Magpies have achieved this season, playing a key role with his goals and assists up front to help the club to a respectable mid-table position.

Rondon has proven himself to be a wonderful bargain signing on loan and losing him at the end of the campaign would deal a massive blow to Newcastle’s chances in the upcoming season.

A good all-around striker noted for his exceptional strength, aerial prowess and hold-up play, Rondon is really sharp and agile for a player of his stature and has an incredible eye for goal.

He likes to get involved in the build-up play and creates chances with clever passes and subtle flick ons in and around the box, whilst also showing good movement to get on the end of through balls and crosses delivered into the area.

Given that Chinese clubs are not reluctant to splash the cash, selling Joselu for a profit would somewhat boost Newcastle’s funds, which in turn would help them to strike a deal for Rondon.

The Magpies should do everything in their power to keep hold of Rondon and they should not hesitate to sacrifice the Spaniard for that purpose.
