While speaking to TRT Spor (h/t Liverpool Echo), Everton striker Cenk Tosun opened the door of a probable return to former club Besiktas in the future.
The Turkish finisher has endured a difficult spell with the Toffees since arriving from Besiktas in January 2018. Despite arriving two years back for £27m under Sam Allardyce, Cenk Tosun has failed to nail down a regular spot in the side, making just 51 appearances in total so far.
He featured just five times for the Toffees this season and managed one goal. This saw him get offloaded to fellow league rivals Crystal Palace in January. However, there seems to be no end to his miseries as he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in March after making just five appearances for the Eagles.
To date, he has scored ten times for Everton, most of which came in the year 2018. Since then, his career seems to have taken a downward spiral, with the 28-year-old falling down the pecking order of things at Everton.
He is behind Everton’s in-form strikers Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and youngster Moise Kean. Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison are in excellent form at the moment, enjoying rare individual success despite their side’s dismal show this season.
The two have together scored 23 of Toffees’ 37 league goals this term, making them undisputed starters in the current Everton line-up. Kean, on the other hand, recently arrived from Juventus last summer.
Despite the Italian struggling for form in his maiden campaign, he is favoured over Cenk Tosun by Carlo Ancelotti. With the striker being sent to Selhurst Park in order to gain game time, it is evident that he is clearly not in Ancelotti’s plans for the future.
With the side already having many other strikers other than him in the squad, out-of-form finisher Cenk Tosun’s chances seem increasingly limited.
Hence, keeping him in the side just feels surplus to the club’s requirements. Everton should rather sell him and make use of that money to strengthen areas that need clear improvement.
At the moment, Everton have two in-form finishers in Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison. Also, Kean is a good back-up option. With duo increasingly preferred by current boss Ancelotti, Cenk Tosun’s chances are slim. Offloading him will get the club some money, which they could in turn use to develop the side.
