Mary Richardson Kennedy, the estranged second wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr (RFK Jr’s wife), died at the age of 52 in her home in Bedford, New York. The ex-wife of the nephew of the former President of the United States of America in John F. Kennedy, reportedly hung herself. While asphyxiation was named as the cause of death, the autopsy ruled her death as a suicide.
The couple was married for 16 years and had four children together before separating in 2010. The past couple of years before her untimely demise had been troubled ones for Mary Kennedy. She was charged with driving while intoxicated in May 2010, when she was pulled over with a blood alcohol level of .11. The legal driving limit is .08.
The only passenger at the time had been the family dog, although Kennedy allegedly told police that she was driving to the school carnival to pick up “some people”. After Kennedy’s original DUI arrest, rumors of marriage trouble bubbled to the surface, including reports that RFK Jr had already filed for divorce.

“While we would naturally prefer to remain private at this very upsetting time, we feel compelled to make this statement because the description of Mary carried by certain news organizations since her passing yesterday is wholly inconsistent with the sister we knew and the life she, in fact, lived,” her family said in a written statement.
The statement did not single out any particular reports. But several accounts of her death noted her troubled marriage to the son of the onetime New York senator, who was assassinated in 1968, and the details of their private lives that were exposed when he filed for divorce in May 2010.
