Born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane in Washington, New Jersey, Halsey’s ascent to pop stardom began on the same proving grounds as many other Millennial moguls: Myspace, Tumblr, YouTube and SoundCloud.
As the story goes, they amassed 14,000 Myspace friends by age 14 and 16,000 YouTube subscribers by age 18, with acoustic Taylor Swift covers and One Direction parody songs, connecting directly and deeply with their fans with the kind of candor, over-sharing, and immediacy seemingly tailor-made for social media’s youth culture hothouse.
What has Halsey said about their sexuality?
Halsey is famously outspoken about their sexuality. It’s one of the most endearing qualities of the American singer-songwriter, who hit number one with their latest album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom. She has repeatedly released explicitly bisexual love songs, such as Strangers, which she sang with bisexual Fifth Harmony star Lauren Jauregui.
When their record label suggested straight pop star Katy Perry for the other half of the song’s duet, she hit back in style. They told executives: “I’m not putting an artist on this song unless they’re f***ing gay” – and they got their way. And the second single they released from their latest album was Bad At Love, another brilliant song about same-sex relationships.
As a biracial, bisexual feminist who also openly discusses their bipolar disorder with no firewall and no filter, Halsey represents a triumvirate of identities rarely seen in the Top 40. Ironically, they are best known for their feature on a hyper-conventional frat-pop mega-hit with The Chainsmokers, “Closer,” but with hopeless fountain kingdom, all of that is set to change.
In 2019, Halsey continued that tradition of outspokenness during their intimate show at London’s Electric Ballroom. The singer took to the stage wearing a T-shirt bearing a photo of a gay couple who were assaulted in London just a few days prior. The back of their shirt read, “F*ck Your Straight Pride.”
The couple displayed on their shirt were Melania Geyamont and her girlfriend Chris, a couple who claimed that they were beaten on a London bus by a group of young men.
According to a Facebook post from Geymonat, the group of at least four men began demanding that she and her girlfriend kiss for them on the night of May 30, and allegedly began beating both of them when they refused. Since the incident, five teenage boys have been arrested in connection with what the London police are calling the “homophobic attack,” according to The New York Times.
Who has Halsey dated so far?
The Grammy-winning artist was in a long-term relationship with writer and producer Alev Aydin, and the two welcomed a child, Ender, in July 2021. However, the pair amicably split in April 2023, with plans to co-parent their son.
Prior to their relationship with Aydin, Halsey had several high-profile romances and has been linked to fellow entertainers such as Matty Healy, Machine Gun Kelly and G-Eazy. Halsey’s dating life has also served as the inspiration for her music, and easter eggs about the singer’s past relationships can be found within the lyrics of hit songs like “Without Me” and “You Should Be Sad.” In 2015, Halsey was in a relationship with Lido (born Peder Losnegård), the executive producer of her album Badlands. By August of that year, the pair had broken up, but they continued to live together in Los Angeles.
Halsey was first photographed with actor and rapper Machine Gun Kelly (born Colson Baker) in June 2016. The pair walked the red carpet and posed together at the premiere of his Showtime series Roadies. Halsey and G-Eazy (born Gerald Earl Gillum) entered a longterm —and very public — relationship in 2017. The two met at a party, as G-Eazy told Paper that same year.
“We could talk for hours endlessly,” he told the magazine. “She’s been through a lot in her personal life, in her professional life. It shocks me all the time that she’s as young as she is, because even I’ll forget sometimes and think she’s my age and forget that she’s five years younger.” In addition to making several PDA-filled red carpet appearances, the pair gave fans insight into their romance with the release of their steamy duet, “Him & I.”
However, after a year of dating, the couple decided to take a break in July 2018, as Halsey confirmed on Instagram. Only one month later, however, Halsey and G-Eazy appeared to be back together when they were seen holding hands at an MTV VMAs afterparty. That October, they vacationed in Italy for Halsey’s 24th birthday and walked the red carpet together at the American Music Awards. By the end of the month, though, they’d split again.
