Craig Carton has officially announced his departure from WFAN, and it will take effect at the end of the month. He will be leaving his role as the co-host of the afternoon drive show with Evan Roberts to pursue a morning program at FS1. According to a report by Andrew Marchand of The Post, Carton’s decision comes with a lucrative seven-figure salary, enabling him to fully concentrate on his new endeavor.
During a special broadcast, Carton took the opportunity to share his mixed emotions about this career change. While he expressed happiness for the new opportunity, he also revealed that leaving WFAN is a bittersweet moment and one of the most challenging days he has experienced in his radio career.
Carton confirmed the accuracy of the report by Marchand, emphasizing that June 30 will be his final day on air at WFAN. Spike Eskin, the vice president of programming at WFAN, revealed that Craig Carton and Evan Roberts decided to go on the air an hour earlier in response to The Post’s article.
During the broadcast, Carton made it clear that his departure had nothing to do with his co-host Evan Roberts or anyone else at WFAN. He emphasized that his decision was based on personal factors and the exciting opportunity to host a show at Fox Sports and FS1. Despite the upcoming change, Carton expressed his deep love and appreciation for WFAN, considering it as his radio family and the platform where he has thrived as a talk show host for over three decades.
Carton revealed that he started his career in Buffalo earning a modest salary of $12,000 per year. However, through hard work and determination, he eventually climbed the ranks and landed a position at WFAN.
He openly acknowledged the challenges he faced and the choices he had to make. Carton admitted that he found himself in a difficult situation due to substantial gambling debts, which led to a year-long prison sentence for fraud. In order to repay his debts and prioritize his family, he realized he needed to focus on a single job.
Reflecting on his past, Carton acknowledged the complexity of decision-making. He recalled the tough times he went through, emphasizing that just three years ago, he was known by a prison identification number.
However, Carton’s daily routine was incredibly demanding. Without portraying himself as a victim, Carton described the challenging schedule he had to endure. He would wake up as early as 2:30 a.m. to prepare for his morning show on FS1, followed by his responsibilities for the WFAN afternoon drive.
This left him with very little time to spend with his family before he had to retire to bed around 8 p.m., even before the games he needed to analyze on WFAN had concluded.
